Research writing is a structured, evidence-based form of academic writing used to communicate the process and findings of a research study in a clear, logical, and transparent way. Thus:
- Purpose-driven - It addresses a clearly defined research problem or question.
- Evidence-based - Claims are supported by credible sources, data, and analysis — not opinion.
- Structured and systematic - It usually follows a recognised format such as: Introduction; Literature Review; Methodology; Results; Discussion; Conclusion
- Objective and critical - The tone is formal, balanced, and analytical rather than emotional or persuasive
- Transparent and replicable - Especially in postgraduate research, the writing must explain methods clearly enough that another researcher could understand (and possibly replicate) the study.
