Initiator, innovator, motivator and investigator are the words Dr Hendrik Ewerts, a North-West University (NWU) alumnus, uses to describe himself.
The 35-year-old trailblazer has done very well for himself over the years.
Dr Hendrik currently works as a project manager for research and development at the Rand Water Academy, the largest water board in Africa and in the Southern Hemisphere.
“My daily tasks are performed within the space of project management. I apply the principles associated with the successful implementation of research projects,” says Dr Hendrik.
He is also an associate editor of phycology for the African Journal of Aquatic Science (AJAS).
The internationally recognised scientific author and editor obtained his BSc Botany and Biochemistry, HonsBSc in Natural Science, MSc in Natural Science, PhD in Environmental Science and Postgraduate Diploma in Management – all at the NWU.
During his time at the university Dr Hendrik was interested in leadership activities. He was the Potchefstroom Campus SRC’s 2008/2009 chairperson for the Council of Societies and also served as chairperson of the student cultural group DIVACO.
He states that the leadership roles he held at the NWU have had a positive impact on his career. “I encourage students to become part of groups like DIVACO. This will not only help them to enjoy a balanced student life, but also prepare them for making a meaningful contribution in South Africa and the world.”
In the next five years, he sees himself as the Programme Manager in Research and Development – Water Sector Professorship.
