Sigi is an international sports star

Sigi Burger, an alumna of the North-West University (NWU), has proven that dedication, hard work and resilience are the three components that are needed to be successful. The 24-year-old sports star currently lives in London, and is a professional netball player for the London Pulse in the Vitality Netball Superleague.

“My job entails training, playing matches, building the London Pulse fan base, making appearances and occasionally managing their social media. I also coach netball at a local school in London every afternoon,” says Sigi.

She obtained her BCom Economics and International Trade qualification at the NWU in 2017.

“The NWU has played a major role in my career. I would not have become a member of the South African national netball team – a SPAR Protea player – and have accomplished the things that I have today if it was not for the support I received from the NWU Sports office and South African national netball coach Dorette Badenhorst,” she says.

Sigi has a long list of sports achievements. “I had the opportunity to take part in the Commonwealth Games 2018 and the Netball World Cup 2019. In 2018 I was declared to have the highest shooting average in the Vitality Netball Superleague,” she says. During her time at the NWU she was named as the NWU Junior Sportswoman in 2016 and the NWU Senior Sportswoman in 2018.

She states that in the next five years she wants to be happy at a personal and professional level. “I want to have played at least two seasons in the Suncorp Super League in Australia, be a Sky Sports presenter and be happily engaged,” she concludes.
