Thato – a law-abiding citizen

Thato Mashishi (27) has made great strides in his career since he obtained his Bachelor of Law qualification from the North-West University (NWU) in 2016.

He currently works as a legal consultant for KPMG Legal Services. He specialises in mergers and acquisitions, financial services law, general corporate and commercial law. “I also provide specialist support to auditors, whom I advise on corporate law for both listed and unlisted clients in various industries,” says Thato.

Over the years he has made a name for himself as an exceptional lawyer, as a thought leader by writing regularly for various publications in the legal fraternity, and as a media personality by sharing his expertise on various radio, print and television channels.

During his time at the NWU he held a number of leadership positions, but being the president of the Golden Key International Honour Society and the deputy chairperson of the Law Students’ Council are what he is most proud of.

He states that the NWU played a critical role in his career. “During my third year of study I secured articles of clerkship with one of the leading international business and litigation law firms after hearing about them at an NWU career fair,” says Thato.

One of his biggest achievements to date was obtaining his master’s degree in Corporate Law recently. In the next five years he sees himself occupying a more senior role at KPMG and providing expert advice as a corporate and commercial law attorney.
