Young and making a mark in HR
As we celebrate Youth Month, it is inspiring to see how NWU alumni are making their mark in different economic sectors and professions. Look no further than Innocentia Mphuthi, a human resources (HR) and people expert at the NWU, who says human resources (HR) was a case of love at first sight for her.
“My job entails a range of generalist HR functions, including advising clients on HR matters and employee relations, assisting with performance management and remuneration administration and of course, recruiting and selecting top-notch employees for the NWU.”
She completed a BCom Entrepreneurship and Business Management in 2012, BCom Industrial Psychology and Labour Relations Management in 2015 and BCom Honours in Industrial Psychology in 2018, all at the NWU.
Mphuthi credits the university for nurturing her to be the practitioner she is today and for preparing her to soar even higher in the profession in the future.
“Working for NWU has sharpened my interpersonal skills and assisted me to also be able to embrace diversity,” she says.
“My love for the profession motivates me to one day be an established brand in the HR profession. I see myself participating in more projects and committees that are aimed at making a difference in our university and societies.”
Currently chairperson of the Young Alumni Committee, Mphuthi has been in leadership roles since she co-founded the Black Management Forum student chapter at the Vanderbijlpark Campus, a platform she used as a young leader to engage on socio-economic issues.
She was also a netball player and a leader in the student residence chapter.
Mphuthi says she has good memories about her student days.
“My student days made me love this place, student life and academic training in the field that I am now working in.”
The feeling is mutual, Mphuthi!
